What is “30 plants a week”?
It’s a simple goal: eat 30 different plant foods over seven days. Vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices all count.
The number comes from the American Gut Project, a large citizen-science study published in 2018 that looked at how many different plants people ate each week. Since then, “30 plants a week” has become a popular way to add more variety to everyday meals.

What is 30 plants a week?
It’s a goal of eating 30 different plant foods over seven days. Vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices all count, and each plant counts once per week.
Do herbs and spices count towards 30 plants?
Yes. Some people count herbs and spices as a quarter of a plant because the portions are small. Veggie keeps it simple: every different plant counts as one, whether it’s a vegetable, a nut or a spice.
Can I decide what counts as a plant?
Yes. Veggie starts with an empty catalogue and you add the plants you eat, so you set the rules. Whether you count potatoes, coffee, or red and green peppers separately is up to you.
Is Veggie free?
You can try every feature free for 7 days, a full week of logging. After that, you can continue with a subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase. Subscriptions can be cancelled any time in your App Store or Google Play account.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Veggie works on your phone straight away, and your log is stored on your device.
Does Veggie give diet or medical advice?
No. Veggie is a simple logging tool that helps you keep track of variety. For advice about your diet or health, talk to a qualified professional.
